frequently asked questions
  • How is the SELENACUP produced?

SELENACUP was designed and developed in Austria. The medical grade- silicon comes from our partner Wacker AG in Munich

  • What is the menstrual cup?

Menstrual cups are tulip-shaped containers made of soft medical silicone (e.g. Selenacup) or plastic which, having been folded, are inserted into the vagina during the menstruation.

The menstrual fluid is collected in the cup. After being emptied and washed with clean water, the cup is ready to be used again.

The cup can be reused, which means that you can use it for several years!

  • I use tampons and pads, why is the cup a better solution?

The menstrual cup Selenacup, unlike tampons and pads, is made of medical silicone which is safe for our health.

Additionally, the cup increases comfort during the menstruation, since you change it more rarely than tampons and pads. Depending on how intensive your period is, you can use the cup without a change for up to 8 hours. The cup is a cheaper solution than tampons and pads in the long run, because one cup can be used for several years.

  • What are the advantages of Selenacup?

Selenacup provides up to 8 hours of safe protection.

In the long run, using Selenacup is much cheaper than the expenses on tampons and pads. The investment usually pays off after as few as 4 months, as the cup can be used for several years if you take care of it well.

Selenacup does not dry the vagina out, as it does not absorb the menstrual fluid but collects it. The sensitive vaginal flora remains in balance and is less prone to fungus and other germs.

By using Selenacup you take care of the environment, because you don’t produce huge amounts of disposable hygienic products that are difficult to decompose.

While swimming, Selenacup preserves leakproofness and prevents germs from entering the vagina.

  • I’ve bought Selenacup and now what?

Congratulations on a wise purchase! From now on you will be going through #BestPeriod.

Read the instructions attached to the cup. We describe in them, step by step, how to start your adventure with the cup.

After unpacking it, scald the cup out with hot water. Wash your hands.

Assume a comfortable position e.g. place one of your legs on the bathtub, squat or sit on the toilet. Next, fold Selenacup and insert it in your vagina in such a way that no part of the cup sticks out. However, don’t place it too deeply, so that you don’t have problems with removing it.

Be patient and don’t get discouraged after first unsuccessful attempts. Getting used to the cup and finding your own way of inserting it might take you some time. Until you get experience, the cup may leak a bit, so at the beginning, just in case and for better safety you can additionally use a liner.

The effort will definitely pay off and you will not want to part with Selenacup during those special days!

  • How to fold Selenacup before inserting it into the vagina?

Before inserting it into the vagina, you have to fold the cup to decrease its size. You can do it in a very simple way. The step by step instructions can be found in the photos below as well as in our instructional video

    1. The simplest way of folding the cup is the C shape. Hold the cup with both hands and fold it in half.

    2. In order to obtain the S shape, hold the cup with both hands, pinch it and pull its two ends in opposite directions.

    3. You can push the edge inside with your thumb.

    4. The 7 shape can be obtained by holding the pinched cup by its corner and folding it over.

  • How do I find the correct size cup for my body?

The SELENACUP should form a light seal with the vaginal wall, should not slip and should be easy both to insert and to remove. The correct size of cup depends on the heaviness of your period and your anatomy. Height and weight do not play a part.

Things to consider when choosing the correct size:

    • Your period flow: If you have a light flow a small SELENACUP should be enough. Heavier periods may require a larger sized cup, so that they do not need to be emptied as frequently.
    • Your pelvic floor muscles: There are two types of SELENACUP: SELENACUP and SELENACUP aktiv. The more active you are and the more toned your pelvic floor muscles, the harder your menstrual cup should be in order to create a seal and avoid leakage. To determine which type of SELENACUP is right for you, insert a clean finger into your vagina and squeeze your muscles as if you were trying to suck your finger up. If you feel a light tap or gentle squeeze, then the classic SELENACUP is the one for you. If however, you are able to squeeze your finger tightly for more seconds with your muscles, especially if you regularly do exercise such as biking, riding, Pilates, belly dancing or ballet, then we recommend the SELENACUP active.
    • The location of your cervix: This will determine whether you need a longer or shorter menstrual cup. Insert a clean finger into your vagina until you come across something that feels like the tip of your nose or the tip of a penis. If you were able to fit a whole finger in before you felt your cervix (or you couldn’t feel anything as your cervix is higher then can be reached with your finger), you will need a large or medium cup. If you only fit half of your finger in, try a medium or small. If you can reach your cervix by only fitting in your first finger joint you need a small SELENACUP. If the smallest size is still too big for you, you can turn it round, so the ring is inside your cup or you can cut off the ring and file down the sides.

These are the three things to consider when choosing the correct size of SELENACUP for you.

If you are unsure which size is the right for you, don’t hesitate to write to us. We would be happy to help!

    Measurements

    Holding capacity:

    • S: 21,00 ml
    • M: 26,12 ml
    • L: 33,71 ml

    Size S has the capacity of 21 ml, size M – 26,12 ml and size L – 33,71 ml.

  • Can the cup fall out by itself?

Don’t worry. The cup will not fall out by itself if you have chosen the right size. After it unfolds, the cup completely adheres to the vaginal walls and additionally its upper edge, after it is fully unfolded, has a bigger diameter than the entrance to the vagina. The cup is held in place by the pelvic floor muscles.

  • Can the SELENACUP be worn when exercising or playing sports?

Yes, the SELENACUP is ideal for sports and exercise! It provides 100% leak-free protection even when swimming or riding.

  • Can I wear my SELENACUP overnight?

Yes, the SELENACUP can be safely worn during the day and overnight for up to 8 hours (with or without underwear). Simply make sure you empty your cup before going to bed, and as soon as you wake up.

  • How often should I empty my SELENACUP?

The frequency with which you need to empty it depends on your menstrual flow. We suggest emptying the SELENACUP as often as you usually change tampons or pads. After short you will see how long you can wear your SELENACUP. At least after 8 hours you should empty it.

  • How do I empty my SELENACUP?

Empty the contents of your cup into the toilet or sink.

  • How to wash and disinfect the cup?

During your period, it is enough to wash the SC with water and pH- neutral soap. If you are on a public toilet, you can wipe the SELENACUP with toilet paper and a small amount of water from a water bottle you brought along. In other cases, you can use your urine which is usally sterile and thus very suitable. After its purchase and before each period, the SELENACUP should be cleaned more thoroughly. Insert the SELENACUP into the enclosed cleaning container, fill it with water, place the lid loosely on it and set it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes at 800-1000 watts. You can also sterilize the SC in a pot. Bring plenty of water to a boil on the stove and let boil for 2-3 minutes. Make sure that the SELENACUP is not at the bottom of the pot when it is boiling as this can damage it. You can, for example, put the cup into a whisk. Do not leave the pot unattended.

For discoloration, tooth tablets may be used. Place the SELENACUP in a cup of water with the tablets overnight and then rinse well with water afterwards.

The small holes on the rim can be cleaned with clean interdental brushes. If you live in an area with very calcareous water, you can put a drop of vinegar into the water. This stops any lime scale forming on the cup.

Always make sure you keep the cup as clean as possible, so the vaginal flora remains in equilibrium.

  • How do I insert my SELENACUP?

Wash your hands, then fold the SELENACUP and lead the folded side into the vagina. At the beginning it works best under a warm shower where you can relax, and you have plenty of water to moisten your cup. You can do this whilst standing with one leg on the bathtub, or crouching. Of course, you can also try sitting down on the toilet.

The SELENACUP should be worn as high so you can’t feel it. Whether you insert it further up the cervix or slightly lower, is a matter of taste. In any case, you should still be able to reach your SELENACUP to be able remove it. Try turning the SELENACUP a little by the grooves below after inserting it to ensure that it has unfolded and can form a seal.

You’ll find the folding technique and position best suited to you after 2 or 3 periods at the latest. Water or silicone-friendly lubricant can facilitate the insertion.

Do not be discouraged if it does not work right away. Everybody is different, and practice is everything. Should you have problems in the beginning such as leaking, discomfort or other problems, the size is often not the problem. Please try the following technique then:

Insert only the top half of your Selenacup into your vagina, allowing the bottom half to stick out – this is easiest either while standing, with one leg propped up, or while squatting. Allow the SELENACUP to unfold, controlling it where necessary by running your finger along the top. You can also use your finger to gently push away your vaginal wall to allow the cup to unfold fully. Once it has unfolded, use your pelvic muscles to slowly suck the SELENACUP up inside you while pushing the cup gently with your finger – push at an angle towards your tailbone rather than straight up. If inserted in this way, your SELENACUP should no longer leak and not cause you any pain. If you are still experiences leakages, discomfort or any other problems, don’t hesitate to write to us.

  • Can I insert the SELENACUP prior to my period?

Yes - you can insert it in the hours running up to your period, however the cup should not be worn for longer than 8 hours. We would not advice you to test out the SELENACUP outside of your period.

  • How do I know if I’ve inserted the cup correctly?

The SELENACUP should be worn as low as it can comfortably sit without you feeling it. Whether you insert it further up the cervix or slightly lower, is a matter of taste. In any case, you should still be able to reach your SELENACUP to be able remove it.

After you insert it, the cup should unfold fully in the vagina, adhering tightly to its walls. To check if that’s happened, press the bottom part of the cup slightly, you can also try to twist it, by holding the stem. You can also put your finger in and move it around the rim to check if it is unfolded properly.

  • How do I clean the SELENACUP after a vaginal infection?

After an infection or inflammation, it is particularly important to thoroughly clean the SELENACUP to prevent reinfection. Boil the SELENACUP in water for 20 minutes, and repeat this process 3 times. This works the best by putting the SELENACUP in a whisk to minimize damage to the silicone. Never leave the pot unattended. Between the cooking times, let the cup air dry. This will kill the spores. Also wash the storing pouch at at least 60 degrees.

  • What if I still feel my SELENACUP or if it leaks?

If you are able to feel your Selenacup inside you or if it leaks as soon as it is inserted, try the following technique:

  • My SELENACUP has a white coating after boiling it. Do I have to throw it away?

No. This may mean you live in an area with very calcareous water. Just add a shot of vinegar to the boiling water to remove the residue.

  • How do I remove my SELENACUP?

To remove your SELENACUP you have to release the seal at first. Wash your hand, than whilst squatting our sitting on the toilet eighter remove the seal by hooking in one finger in the upper ring or by squeezing the base of your SELENACUP with your index finger and thumb. It should come out without any effort. If you feel a resistance or ‘pull’, the seal has not been released.

  • What if I can not remove the SELENACUP?

Try to relax first and never panic. If your pelvic floor muscles are relaxed, it will be far easier to remove the SELENACUP. Go under a hot shower, set your legs hip-width apart with your back to the wall and sit down into a deep squat. This will allow the cup to come down by itself a lot easier and make it easier for you to reach. Otherwise, clench your muscles as you would when going to the bathroom and gently pull the SELENACUP by its ring downward in a zigzag motion. Then, try using your longest finger to reach the top edge of the cup, or press the cup at the bottom grooves with two or three fingers to loosen the seal and then take it out.

If you still can not get it out please see your gynecologist.

In general, you should always insert your SELENACUP as far as you can still reach it to remove it again.

  • How should I store my SELENACUP?

To ensure the longest possible lifespan, store your SELENACUP in the breathable carrying pouch. It is made from cotton and allows air to circulate

  • Can I use the SELENACUP when I am allergic to latex?

Yes you can. The SELENACUP is latexfree.
